No longer will you get lost while out enjoying the outdoors with your local hillwalking club or friends.
This course is designed to give you the skills and confidence to navigate correctly and keep safe in
the great outdoors.
Whether you wish to do this course for your own personal enjoyment and knowledge, lead a walking group or a step towards a Walking Guide Qualification this is the course for you..
The Course is run by a qualified and recognised BOS Instructor Emily Mc Cullagh who is an excellent instructor with numerous years experience on the hills herself.
This course will take place in the Wicklow Mountains over 2 days. Giving you the chance to put all the theory you will have gained into practice.
The course will take place in the Glenmalure area of Wicklow both in a classroom and the outdoors.

Then you can go for either Walking Group Leader

Part 1: May 18th - 19th
The Mountain Skills Part I Course Includes:
MS1: During this weekend you will learn about map-reading and navigation techniques, recognition of natural features, distance measurement and timing of walks.
Mountain hazards are also covered, as is personal equipment such as correct clothing and emergency equipment.
The Mountain Skills Part II Course Includes:MS2: This 2 day course will include a mix of indoor talks/ discussions learning with a great mix of outdoor practicals. The course covers Route Planning, route cards, compass and bearing work, skills for negotiating different terrain and steeper ground.
Enviromental Impact, emergency procedures and night time navagational skills.

Required Personal Equipment:
- Walking boots,
- Waterproofs
- Day rucksack, 35Litre is best.
- Warm outdoor wear (fleece and thermals),
- Sheet 56 OSI Map
- Hat and gloves,
- Compass- Silva type 4,
- Head torch (plus spare battery),
- Waterproof rucksack liner,
- Small first aid kit,
the great outdoors.
