SligoThe landscape of Sligo and the monuments dotted around it were an important source of inspiration to the poet William Butler Yeats, with whom this region is inextricably associated. The Dartry Mountains north of Sligo are predominantly of limestone, forming characteristic plateaus with steep escarpments. Visible from Sligo Town is the familiar and prominent spur of Benbulben. Less well known but even more remarkable is Ben Wiskin, which resembles a breaking wave. Benbulben, Rosses Point, Glencar and the distinctively shaped Benbulben all feature in Yeats’ poetry, along with many other spots. Near Sligo Town is scenic Lough Gill, named after Gile, a beautiful maiden. On the lake is the tiny island of Innisfree, which would be of little note, had not Yeats written a poem entitled The Lake Isle of Innisfree describing this idyllic hideaway from the hurly-burly of everyday life.

Sat  April 11th   Drumcliffe Bay walk and Lissadell House

Walk Belbulbin and the King’s Gully . This is an excellent walk giving views over scenic Glencar on the way up and a wide sweep of the coast line from the summit of its plateau. After the walk we will be visiting the resting place of W.B. Yeat's, who is greatly associated with the area of Sligo.

This part of Ireland has been inhabited since earliest times. Prehistoric Man left his mark on the landscape, constructing the megalithic cemeteries of Carrowmore (south of Sligo Town) and Carrowkeel (in the Bricklieve Mountains, near the border with Roscommon), as well as the colossal megalithic cairn on the summit plateau of Knocknarea known as Miosgán Méadhbha or Queen Maeve’s Grave.

Sun April 12th Ben bulbin and the King's Gully.

This walk takes us along the shores of Drumcliffe Bay, passing Lissadell House, the former home of the Gore-Booth family where Eva Gore-Booth and Constance Markiewicz grew up. This trail is along the northern shore of Sligo bay through mainly broadleaf trees of ash, beech and sycamore along with some elm trees. On this trail, there is a hide where the walker can observe the wild life along the seashore.

Walk Details : Level seashore walk along sandy and pebbly beaches. Boots essential.

After the walk for those who wish to try a seaweed bath to relax and revive their bodies we will visit the Seaweed Baths at Enniscrone & Strandhill.
