Walks and Fleadh Ceoil Festivals

Fleadh Ceoils (Traditional Irish music festivals) are run throughout the year in all parts of Ireland by Comhaltas. Basically its a competition which creates a lively and colourful evening of Irish Tradional Music, song dance and story telling. Hilltoptreks organise walks, transport and accommodation around these festivals.

KerryThe annual festival of Irish traditional music, song and dance, which highlights the work of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann in County Kerry, will be held in Kenmare from July 16th - 18th 2010. Starting on Tuesday, Irish traditional music, sean-nós singing, dancing, and story telling can be experienced at its best each night at various venues in the town. Entertainment will be on offer each day on the streets as well as in the bars all through the weekend. The festival will finish with open air set dancing on the streets on Sunday evening.

Day 1 Fri: Travel to Kenmare in County Kerry from Dublin with a break for lunch on the way. We will be based for the next few days in Kenmare. After we arrive and get settled into the accommodation we will then go for a meal in one of the fine restaurants in the area..

Day 2 Sat: After breakfast we will visit the gap of Dunloe amd walk the Purple mountain this is a moderate walk starting at Kate Kearney's Cottage. Return to Kenmare and enjoy the rest of the evening with the fleadh festivities.

Day 3 Sun: Today we will travel to the town of Dingle and have bodhrana choice of walk either along the old Green road over looking the town of Dingle and the surrounding Peninsula / or a walk on Mount Brandon. We will also visit Annascaul the home town of Ireland's finest explorer Tom Crean. Back in time to Kenmare for the outdoor set dancing part of the festival.

Day 4 Mon: Choice of walk in the area before we leave Kerry and return to Dublin.

mournesDay 1 Fri:

Pickup from Dublin St. Stephen's Green 10am

Travel to the Mournes and Castlewellan with a short stop on the way. A walk in the Castlewellan Forest Park and its incredible tree arboretum. Dating from about 1860 the Arboretum contains exotic trees and plants from throughout the world and is particularly famed for the conifer ‘Castlewellan Gold’. Return to Castlewellan and return there to relax over a pint or two and enjoy the sounds of traditional music.

Day 2 Sat: Walk Slieve Donard the highest mountain in Northern Ireland. This is a beautiful walk starting at Newcastle seaside town and taking a forested path to the foot of Slieve Donard. Reaching the Walls that sit atop the Mournes and following them to the top of Slieve Donard. Return to Castlewellan for evening meal and more festivities.

Day 3 Sun:

A short walk in the Mournes near the seafront town of Rostrevor break for lunch and return to Dublin.
